About this Episode:

A message from our creator/host Elease Dillard:

Happy Easter, #letsbreaktheodds family! As we record episodes behind the scenes for next season (premiere date will be announced soon!)—we wanted to share a snippet of this interview that we did with one of our guests for this upcoming season.

We have never done this before (sharing content in advance before the season premiers); however, it was placed on my heart to share this for Easter (not planned). Often times, it is easy to get caught up in the commercial side of Easter (eggs, candy, etc.) that the true meaning of the holiday can often unintentionally be overlooked—celebrating the freedom that can be found through Jesus Christ. As someone who has personally experienced the freedom that can be found in Jesus…it truly is life changing! 🤍

If you are new, our mission here in the #letsbreaktheodds community is to navigate individuals towards breaking the odds in their life, family, career, and communities. Our four pillars are:

  • Personal Growth & Development
  • Financial Literacy
  • Mental Health
  • Career Development

In this interview snippet for the show, our guest Mr. Ford shares his story of breaking the odds with faith and mental health. As a veteran whose best friends died while they were all serving oversees together—he struggled with PTSD, substance abuse, and “the voice of death” that would not go away.

After struggling for close to ten years, he decided that he would take his life. Seconds before attempting to do so, he had a life-changing encounter. Press play to watch.

P.S.

On behalf of #letsbreaktheodds, we would like to say a special thank you to all our Veterans who have sacrificed their lives to serve our country.

Quote of the Day

“I know there’s a lot of people just like me. I was so addicted to everything…What I would just say is: there is nothing, no sin that Jesus can’t forgive. No life that He cannot renew and restore. I don’t care what you’ve done, what you said, how miserable you were (like me), Jesus can make you a new person today, right now. All you got to do is be serious.”

—Mr. Ford (interview in Break The Odds show)

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in Him [Jesus] will never be put to shame.’ “

—Romans 10:9-11 (NIV Translation)

If you are going through a difficult season, you don’t have to go through it alone. Life is not meant to be done alone. And it’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to go to counseling. There’s no shame in that.

Below are some immediate resources:

There are many other resources that offer affordable counseling/mental health services—including churches, university campuses, and insurance companies (already included in many plans).

If you feel like going to counseling means you lack faith (which is a common feeling that many people have), I want to encourage you with these verses in the Bible where it talks about having counsel in our lives:

  • “Refuse good advice and watch your plans fail. Take good counsel and watch them succeed.” —Proverbs 15:22 (MSG Translation)
  • “Without good direction, people lose their way; the more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances.” —Proverbs 11:14 (MSG Translation)
